A reinvented classic(Review From Amazon) | General Comments: Around 12 years ago, I discovered, and quickly became hopelessly addicted to, this game on my old school Sega Genesis. Unfortunately, the only place I could find it was at my local Blockbuster, and they refused to sell it to me (probably due to the fact that I kept renting it over and over, endlessly). Sadly, one day, it just disappeared. Most likely, someone as addicted as I was stole it. That was 12 years ago, and I'd always kept an eye out for it. So, needless to say, when I heard about the revamped version that was coming out for the PC, I was ecstatic. I got it as soon as it came out, and it was love all over again.
Fast forward to a few months ago, or something like that (I don't remember exactly when this port was released). I was browsing PSP games and happened upon this version. Needless to say, I was ecstatic all over again at the prospect of being able to take my pirating adventure anywhere I went (I tend to spend a lot of time in the hospital, so portability is a big issue for me), and, not to mention being able to uninstall my PC version and regain about a Gig and a half of hard drive space.
Before I got the game, I was slightly worried that such a big game wouldn't translate well onto a smallish screen like the PSP. My worries were promptly put to rest when I got the game, though. It translates perfectly....the ships and land masses are neither too small, nor too big, and you can zoom in or out if you want. A few reviewers have complained that the game is too repetitious, and, I'll admit, it is. You sail around, fight battles, either in your ship or close sword fights (thankfully, the sword fights are generally very easy and go by pretty quickly, because that's my least favorite aspect of the game), dance, look for buried treasure, etc, etc. If you enjoy addictive repetition that lasts for hours, and a completely open-ended story, though, then this is the perfect game for you. |

At least it's only thirty bucks(Review From Amazon) | General Comments: I bought this game based on all the good reviews it received, so after playing it I felt obliged to write one of my own, so other people like me don't make the same mistake.
The graphics and music are fine. Not mind blowing, but still respectable for a psp.
My serious problem with this game is how little there is of it. After about an hour or two to learn the ropes I quickly amped the game all the way up to its hardest level.
The ship to ship combat is remarkably shallow and easy. You basically sail in circles and shoot at the other ship. You give and take little enough damage that conventional sailing ship tactics really play no part, excepting that you want to try and broadside the other ship while keeping away from their sides.
The dueling mode is, if anything, even easier and an easy out to actually having to fight ship to ship battles. I fought around 30 duels, most of them on the hardest difficulty, and only lost twice. If you win the duel, you get their ship, period.
Treasure hunting mode is mind numbingly easy as well, look at the map, navigate there while retaining at least one digger. Once you understand what you're supposed to do, this is impossible to fail at.
The only mode even slightly engaging is the land combat, which is basically an extremely dumbed down version of Field Commander. The only reason it's more entertaining than the rest of the game is that you often face far greater numbers who have more firearms than yourself.
Overall, this game is a complete waste of money. I played for ten hours and felt I had done everything there was to do in the game. The fact that it seems promising when you first start playing doesn't take away from the disappointment that is soon to follow as you wonder to yourself, "Is this it?" |

Quick impressions - didn't really like it(Review From Amazon) | General Comments: I played this game for about an hour and then put it down. I can't really give a full review, because I played it for such a short time, but here are some observations.
There are four different types of gameplay:
1. Sea battles - these were OK; you sail your ship around a game area (ocean map with islands here and there) and pick fights with other ships. You play these from a "bird's eye view". The PSP controls are a little clumsy, but mostly work well. You can get more loot and crew members.
2. Ports - these are strictly menu and dialog-box based. The port isn't a mission area; there is a menu that you select your activity from. You can go to the tavern, meet the governor, etc. You mostly get information, new crew members, and ship repairs in port. No freeroam.
3. Treasure hunt/lost city hunt - you can land your ship on an island and look for treasure. I thought this was really weak. The mission area is very small; you take a group of pirates and wander around looking for treasure. Every once in awhile, a tiger jumps out and kills one of your guys. Again, you are playing from that "bird's eye view".
4. Sword fights - I didn't play any of these but there was a picture on the back of the package. No idea if these are any good or not.
Overall, I didn't like the game. I don't know how to say this right, but it seemed like a very old PC-based game to me. The music, the graphics all seemed very low-tech. |
